88th Auction, lot 122 This landscape of refined composition and colours, captured in the artist’s distinctive style with strong roots in impressionism, represents an insight into Radimský’s work from a period when he was already fully established in France, recognised in Bohemia, and there was no indication in his work, or even in his personal life, that a major turning point would soon come. In this urban landscape with a dominant body of water, painted with dynamic wide brush strokes, Radimský chose a solution that was clearly defined by the context for which it was intended. Precisely at the end of the artist’s long-term stay in France, terminated by external circumstances, he executed his most monumental work. It was a triptych with a total dimension of approximately three by eight metres, a panoramic View of Kolín at three times of the day intended for the hall of the Kolín Town Hall. Radimský regularly visited Kolín before the war and, as indicated by letters to his brother, he had been thinking about this work since 1907. Approximately 7 years had passed from the first mention in the correspondence to the realisation, the final phase of which was concluded just before the beginning of the war; another 12 years passed until the city council decided to pay Radimský a royalty of 65 thousand crowns. The presented canvas represents an overall compositional study of the first of the side wings of the triptych. Although Radimský often executed his paintings alla prima and at a fast pace, due to the complexity of this specific task he logically chose a process that allowed him to gradually refine the scene and its details. Compared to the presented canvas, however, some differences can be found both in the overall layout and in some details. In the finished work, the river is captured more widely, the trees more precisely elaborated, yet some elements like a few rowing boats and piers are completely omitted, which makes the river coast easy on the eye.The painting was published in the artist’s latest monograph and inventory (N. Blažíčková-Horová: Václav Radimský, 1867–1946, Řevnice, 2011, cat. No. 245, p. 249). Assessed during consultations by prof. J. Zemina and Mgr. M. Dospěl, Ph.D. The expertise by Mgr. P. Kubík is attached.
