The Toyen record - the painting Puis, plus tard, which was auctioned for 37,440,000 million crowns, is the most expensive Toyen work sold from the post-war period in the Czech Republic and in the world

Published:  5/28/2023

The poetic canvas comes from the period when the painter had already settled permanently in Paris. Another painting by Toyen Un vide, un silence (Empty, silence) from 1960 was auctioned for 18.5 million crowns.

Both canvases were still not well known to the general public. Their journey to the KODL Gallery led from the author's Paris studio across two different continents. While Un vide, un silence remained on the European side, where it was kept in a Swiss collection for half a century before being re-presented at Sotheby's in Paris last year, the painting Puis, plus tard comes from an overseas collection in Latin America. Even there, this important Czech artist was admired by many collectors.
