Theodor Pištěk (1932–2025)

Theodor Pištěk is undoubtedly one of the most sought-after and highly regarded artists on the Czech art market. Alongside painting, which he considered the central pillar of his artistic practice, he was also a Czechoslovak racing driver who represented his country in motor sport and a film costume designer (indeed, he won the Academy Award for Best Costume Design in 1984 for his work on Miloš Forman's Amadeus). Although such a diverse career might appear difficult to reconcile, in Pištěk’s work these pursuits form remarkably compelling parallels, continually influencing and intersecting with one another. Together they create a wholly distinctive and complex artistic vision that is unparalleled within the context of Czech visual art.

Pištěk studied in Prague at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design (1952) and the Academy of Fine Arts (1952–1958). Livelier structures and relief elements gradually appeared in his early figurative compositions, and his tendency towards geometric abstraction emerged. Starting in the late 1950s, the artist pursued costume design, contributing to over 120 Czech and foreign feature films throughout his career and collaborating with František Vláčil in addition to Miloš Forman. His love for cars came to the fore in the mid-1960s, when he created a series of painting-reliefs structured around car radiators, later followed by large-scale drawings on cardboard or lacquered plywood. In the 1980s, his painting became more contained and concentrated, while work from the 1990s began to rely on spatial illusion.

His excellent technique, comparable to photography in its precise depiction of details, led to his association with hyperrealism, though he had refused such labelling; his work was more of an independent reaction to global trends, though he often transcended these, preserving the individuality and uniqueness of his own expression. His systematic use of narrative layers of motifs and frequent deployment of the picture-within-a-picture principle can be viewed as breakthroughs. “Wrapped heads” are a significant motif, which he used primarily during the Normalisation era at the height of Communist repression; this was followed by a series of “memory maps.” Pištěk eventually described his artistic programme as a form of “New Romanticism”, maintaining that through his masterful command of the illusionistic trompe-l'œil technique he sought to evoke a particular atmosphere, to recall a lived moment or a story whose very reality we begin to question.
